Serra da Estrela Natural Park does not have opening or closing hours like a museum, since it is a natural area. You can access it 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The most common way to get there is by car, as the roads are well signposted and let you explore different points of interest, such as Torre, the highest point in mainland Portugal. We recommend using GPS and planning your routes in advance.

Good news! Entry to Serra da Estrela Natural Park is completely free, as it is a public space. However, you may find costs associated with specific services within the park, such as access to ski resorts in season, equipment rental, or some private tourist attractions. Also consider fuel costs and possible tolls if you are coming from far away.

To have a good experience and explore its main attractions, we suggest spending at least 2 to 3 days in Serra da Estrela. This will allow you to enjoy its landscapes, do a hiking route, visit picturesque villages such as Manteigas or Gouveia, and sample the local cuisine without rushing. If you only have one day, focus on Torre and one of the lakes.

Serra da Estrela is much more than landscapes. It is the heart of a region with a rich history and culture linked to transhumance, Serra da Estrela cheese production, and wool. It is home to the only glacier in the Iberian Peninsula, which gives it great geological and ecological importance. In addition, its villages preserve ancestral traditions and a unique cuisine that is well worth discovering.

The best time of year depends on what you are looking for: winter for snow and skiing (December to March), spring (April to June) to see the bloom and thaw, or autumn (September to November) for ochre colors and pleasant hiking temperatures. Summer (July to August) is ideal for escaping the heat, although it can be busier. As for the best time of day, mornings are perfect for activities and afternoons for spectacular sunsets.

Accessibility conditions vary greatly within the park. Some areas, such as viewpoints and certain stretches of paved roads, are accessible. However, many hiking routes and natural paths are not. If you are traveling with reduced mobility, we recommend researching in advance the specific places you want to visit and choosing those with adapted infrastructure. It is advisable to contact the Natural Park for detailed information about accessible routes.

Around Serra da Estrela, you will find many charming places. We suggest visiting the region’s historic villages, such as Belmonte, birthplace of the explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral, or idyllic Piódão, known as the 'nativity village.' You can also explore glacial lakes such as Covão do Curral, or step into the Wool House in Manteigas to learn about the wool-making tradition.

Of course! Always bring warm clothing with you, even in summer, as the mountain weather changes quickly. Wear comfortable, suitable walking shoes if you plan to hike. Do not forget a good map or GPS, and keep your fuel tank full, as gas stations may be scarce in some areas. And of course, try the famous Serra da Estrela Cheese and the local cuisine. Be respectful of the environment and follow the marked routes.
