Donde las piedras guardan secretos de contrabandistas de queso y batallas donde murió 'la ametade' de un ejército
Covão d'Ametade is an open-air natural area and, as such, it is generally open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no specific opening or closing times. It is located in the Serra da Estrela, near the city of Covilhã. The most common way to get there is by car, following signs to Manteigas or Penhas da Saúde, and then turning onto a marked road. The views along the way are already part of the adventure!
Good news! Visiting Covão d'Ametade is completely free. It is a natural area managed by the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, so there are no entrance fees and no need to buy tickets. You just have to arrive and enjoy nature in its purest state!
The length of your visit can vary depending on your interests. For a quick visit to admire the landscape and take a few photos, between 30 minutes and 1 hour may be enough. However, if you enjoy photography, having a picnic, walking a bit, or simply relaxing by the river, you could easily stay for 2 or 3 hours, or even longer. It depends on you!
Covão d'Ametade is famous for being a beautiful glacial amphitheater, an impressive remnant of the glaciers that once covered the Serra da Estrela. Its importance lies in its scenic beauty, with the Mondego River springing from among rock formations and pine trees. More than legends, its value is geological and natural, making it a peaceful place and an excellent example of the mountain range's biodiversity.
Each season has its charm. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and the colors of the vegetation (flowers in spring, ochres in autumn). Summer is cool and pleasant, perfect for escaping the heat. If you are looking for the magic of snow, winter is spectacular, but it requires caution. As for the time of day, early morning or late afternoon offer exceptional light for photography and fewer crowds.
Unfortunately, access to Covão d'Ametade, as a natural environment with uneven terrain and dirt paths or rocks, is not fully accessible for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. The area may have some slopes and obstacles. It is advisable to assess the ground conditions in advance depending on each particular case.
Serra da Estrela is full of wonders! Near Covão d'Ametade you can visit the Covão dos Conchos (the 'funnel waterfall'), although access requires a hike. I also recommend the viewpoint at Torre (the highest point in mainland Portugal) and picturesque mountain villages such as Manteigas. Nature and landscapes are the true stars here!
Of course! I recommend wearing comfortable footwear suitable for walking on uneven ground. If you go during colder times of year, dress warmly, as mountain weather can change quickly. Do not forget your camera to capture the beauty of the place, and if you plan to have a picnic, bring your own food and drinks, and of course, always take all your trash with you to help preserve this beautiful environment!
