St. James Gate is an open-air monument and can be visited 24 hours a day. However, if you would like detailed historical information, we recommend visiting during the opening hours of the National Museum in Szczecin, which manages the site: Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. You can confirm details on its official website.
Good news! Access to St. James Gate is completely free, as it is part of the public space. If you would like to visit related exhibitions at the National Museum, those do require a paid ticket.
The gate itself is a monument that you can admire in 15–20 minutes. If you combine your visit with the National Museum (located in the same square) or the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, allow 1–2 hours.
It is one of Szczecin's medieval symbols (14th century), part of the old defensive walls. It partially survived the bombings of the Second World War and was restored as a testament to the city's Hanseatic past.
Spring and summer (May–September) are ideal because of the pleasant weather. Avoid days of heavy rain, as it is an uncovered space. There are fewer tourists in the mornings.
The area is partially accessible, with uneven paving around the monument. The adjacent pedestrian area is adapted. Check with the National Museum (+48 91 4315 200) for specific needs.
Less than 5 minutes away: the impressive Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, Market Square, and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Perfect for a historic route through the old town!
1. Wear comfortable shoes (uneven cobblestones). 2. Combine it with the Castle viewpoint (spectacular views). 3. Download the iAudioguía app to get detailed explanations during your walk.
