El lago polaco que Hungría quiso reclamar y tenía razón... hasta que perdió en los tribunales
Tatra National Park is open from dawn to dusk. You need to travel by car or bus to the Palenica Białczańska parking area, and from there walk about 8 km along a paved route (or take a horse-drawn carriage); check the official Tatra National Park website for current alerts.
Park entry is inexpensive (around 9 PLN), but the critical part is parking, which costs between 35 and 55 PLN and is mandatory to reserve online in advance or you will not be able to park. You can buy your tickets and reserve parking directly on the official e-ticket platform.
Allow around 5 to 6 hours for the full experience at a relaxed pace. The uphill walk takes about two and a half hours at a normal pace, plus however long you want to enjoy the views at the lake and the descent.
Morskie Oko means 'Eye of the Sea' because of an old legend claiming it was connected underground to the Adriatic Sea. It is the largest and fourth-deepest lake in the Tatra Mountains, spectacularly located at the foot of Mount Rysy.
The secret is to start very early: try to be at the parking area before 7:00 AM, especially in summer and on weekends. September and October offer incredible colors and slightly cooler but still pleasant weather.
Yes, it is one of the few accessible high-mountain routes, since the path is paved all the way to the mountain hut, although the incline is constant and tiring. For people with disabilities, it is possible to drive all the way to the lake with a special permit that must be arranged with the park.
If you still have energy, I highly recommend hiking up to Czarny Staw (Black Lake), which is just above Morskie Oko. It is an additional steep walk of about 40 minutes, but it offers the best panoramic view of the main lake from above.
Wear very comfortable footwear (even though it is asphalt, it is 18 km round trip) and bring enough water, since the lines at the mountain hut to buy food are often long. And remember: without a parking reservation, either printed or on your phone, you will be turned back.
