Reserva natural en la Amazonía peruana que protege bosques montanos y premontanos con impresionante biodiversidad, cascadas y senderos para explorar la selva.
The Cordillera Escalera Ecological Reserve does not have fixed 'opening hours' like a museum, since it is a protected natural area. It is best visited during daylight hours, ideally between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM to make the most of the light. You can get there by motorcycle taxi or on a tour from Tarapoto; the journey takes about 30 to 45 minutes. Check transport options at Tarapoto.com.
Access to the Cordillera Escalera Reserve itself is free, as it is a public natural area. However, if you decide to do a specific activity within the reserve, such as visiting Ahuashiyacu Falls or a viewpoint, there may be a small entrance or local guide fee. We recommend bringing some cash, as these are usually symbolic costs.
To have a good experience and enjoy its main attractions, I suggest setting aside at least half a day, between 3 and 5 hours. This will allow you to explore some of its short trails, enjoy the vegetation, and, if you wish, take a dip in one of its refreshing waterfalls, such as Ahuashiyacu Falls.
The Cordillera Escalera Reserve plays a crucial role in conserving Amazonian biodiversity, acting as a green lung for the San Martín region. Culturally, it is a place that connects with local traditions of respect for nature and serves as a source of countless natural resources for communities, in addition to being a site of great scenic beauty that nourishes the soul.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from May to October, when rainfall is less frequent and the trails are more accessible. As for the best time of day, I recommend going early in the morning to avoid the strongest heat and enjoy the peace of the place. You will have to battle your laziness, but your soul will thank you.
Unfortunately, much of the Cordillera Escalera Reserve, as a natural environment with sometimes uneven trails and slopes, is not fully adapted for people with reduced mobility or wheelchairs. Some points near the main road or viewpoints may be more accessible, but there would be limitations for deeper exploration. We suggest contacting local tour operators for specific options.
There is a lot to discover nearby! Just a few minutes from the reserve are the famous Ahuashiyacu Falls, a must for a refreshing swim. You can also visit the Cordillera Escalera viewpoint for stunning views, and the San Martín Botanical Garden if you are interested in local flora. Do not miss the experience at Ahuashiyacu Falls.
My best advice is to wear comfortable, non-slip footwear, bring mosquito repellent and sunscreen, and carry a reusable water bottle. Dress in layers, as the weather can change. And most importantly: bring your camera and your adventurous spirit. Remember, what you see in the photos is not even 10% of what you will feel if you let yourself be carried away by the magic of the jungle. End the day with an unforgettable memory, not with regret that you stayed at the hotel.
