El Río Tigre, enclavado en la selva central de Oxapampa, Perú, ofrece un paisaje de cascadas cristalinas, pozas turquesas y exuberante vegetación, ideal para un encuentro sereno con la naturaleza.
The Tigre River is open 24 hours as a natural attraction, but it is recommended to visit from 8:00 to 17:00 for greater safety. From Oxapampa, take the road to Pueblo Nuevo (about 20 km by car or motorcycle), then walk 30-45 minutes along a marked trail; use local transportation or a taxi. More details at Peru Travel.
Admission is free, as it is a protected natural attraction. You will only pay for transportation to the access point (around S/10-20 by moto-taxi from Oxapampa). Bring cash for local beverage vendors.
I recommend 3-4 hours in total: 1 hour round trip along the trail, plus 2 hours to enjoy the pools and waterfalls. If you go with a guide, it can extend to half a day.
The Tigre River is a natural paradise in the Peruvian central jungle, valued for its crystal-clear waters and pools ideal for bathing, forming part of the Yanesha ecosystem. Culturally, it is sacred to local indigenous communities and represents the biodiversity of Oxapampa, colonized by Austrians in the 19th century.
The best season is the dry season (May to October) to avoid floods and enjoy clear waters; go in the morning (8-11 am) for less heat and more privacy. Avoid heavy rains from November to April.
It is not very accessible due to the steep and slippery 30-45 minute trail; there are no ramps or paved paths. People with reduced mobility can enjoy views from the starting point, but consult with a local guide for adapted options.
Nearby are the Oxapampa Botanical Garden (10 km), the Huancabamba Tunnel and the San Daniel Pools. In downtown Oxapampa, visit the Yanachaga-Chemillen National Park. Explore more at Municipality of Oxapampa.
Bring repellent, swimwear, non-slip shoes, water and snacks; do not litter to preserve the environment. Hire a local guide (S/30-50) for safety and go in a group. Download an audio guide at IAudioguia to enrich your experience.
