Discover Cerrito de la Libertad in Huancayo. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Access to the viewpoint and green areas is free 24 hours a day, although the zoo is usually open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is located just 1 km from downtown Huancayo; you can walk there or take a quick taxi using Google Maps to find your way.
Entry to the general grounds and the viewpoint is completely free for all visitors. Only if you wish to enter the municipal zoo or use the swimming pool will you need to pay a modest fee of around 5 to 10 soles.
I recommend setting aside between 2 and 3 hours to enjoy it at a relaxed pace. This will give you enough time to tour the zoo, visit the Chapel of the Cross of Peace, and take incredible photos of the Mantaro Valley.
It is an icon of Huanca identity and owes its name to the struggle for independence and the abolition of slavery. It is also home to the famous Chapel of the Cross of Peace, an important symbol of social reconciliation in the region.
The best time is during the dry season (from May to October), preferably in the morning for clear skies. However, sunsets offer spectacular golden light that is perfect for photography.
The site has ramps and paved paths, although the terrain is sloped. It is strongly recommended to arrive by vehicle to the upper area (the acoustic shell) to avoid the initial stairs and make the visit easier.
Take advantage of being in the area to visit the geological formations of Torre Torre, located just a few minutes away. You are also very close to Huanca Identity Park, another unmissable cultural gem.
Bring sunscreen and a hat, as solar radiation in the highlands is strong. Do not forget to try the traditional ice creams or picarones at the food stalls and, for a richer experience, consider bringing an audio guide on your phone.
