Donde las aguas esconden pueblos sumergidos y las montañas guardan secretos de hielo y plata
Choclococha Lagoon is a natural site open 24 hours a day all year round, as it has no time restrictions. To get there, take a bus from Huancavelica to Churcampa (about 3 hours) and then a taxi or local shared ride for 1 more hour; check updated routes on Google Maps.
Admission is completely free, as it is a protected natural area with no entry charge. Just consider transportation costs and optional local guides.
An ideal visit lasts between 2 and 3 hours, including time to walk around the lagoon, take photos, and enjoy the scenery. If you do a light hike, you can extend it to half a day.
The lagoon is considered sacred by local Andean communities, associated with Indigenous legends about water spirits and used in ancestral rituals. It is part of Huancavelica’s high-Andean ecosystem, notable for its biodiversity and ecological value.
The best time is the dry season from May to October, with clear skies and accessible roads. Go early in the morning to avoid fog and capture the best sunrise photos.
The main access is via uneven dirt roads, not suitable for wheelchairs or people with reduced mobility; a 4x4 vehicle to the viewpoint is recommended. Contact local guides in Churcampa for adapted options.
Nearby you will find the town of Churcampa with its colonial square, Little Choclococha Lagoon, and the ruins of Marcavalle. In the city of Huancavelica, visit the Cathedral and the Chopccas Sanctuary; more info at Peru Travel.
Bring water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes; hire a local guide for safety (around S/50). Respect the environment by not leaving trash and check the weather before you go.
