Vestigios de las majestuosas cataratas del Guairá, inundadas por la represa de Itaipú, en un parque paraguayo con senderos y miradores que invitan a explorar la naturaleza y la historia.
The park is open every day from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. You can get there via Route PY02 from Ciudad del Este or directly from Salto del Guairá; there is clear signage and free parking available. For more details, visit the official SENATUR website.
Admission is free for all visitors. You would only pay for optional services such as guides or parking if you use your own vehicle, but basic access is free of charge. Check for updates on the Paraguay tourism portal.
It is recommended to allow at least 2 to 3 hours to walk the main trails and enjoy the viewpoints. If you want to take photos and read about the history, you could extend your visit to half a day. It is ideal for a relaxed morning visit.
Guairá Falls were once the largest waterfalls in the world, measuring 1,700 meters wide, before they were flooded in 1982 by the Itaipu Dam. Today, the park preserves their memory with viewpoints over the Paraná River and information panels about their cultural impact on the Guaraní people and the region. It is a key site for understanding the energy history of Paraguay and Brazil.
The best time is the dry season from May to September, when the river is low and remnants of the falls can sometimes be seen emerging. Go early in the morning to avoid the heat and enjoy better light for photos. Check forecasts on the SENATUR website.
The main entrance and some viewpoints are accessible with ramps, but the lower trails are uneven and not recommended for wheelchairs. There are elevated viewpoints available for everyone. Contact the municipality of Salto del Guairá at +595 631 20000 for specific assistance.
Nearby you will find Yguazú Beach for a dip in the river, the city of Salto del Guairá with its square and restaurants, and one hour away, Iguazu Falls in Brazil. You can also explore the route toward Ciudad del Este for shopping. More information at SENATUR Salto del Guairá.
Bring mosquito repellent, comfortable shoes for the trails, water, and sunscreen; do not forget binoculars for viewing the river. Download an audio guide or join a local tour for more stories. Visit in a group for safety and respect the park’s environmental rules.
