Discover the ancient history and legends surrounding Yaguarón Hill, a sacred and cultural site in the heart of Paraguay.
Access to the hill is public and there are no gates, so it is open 24 hours a day. However, we strongly recommend visiting in daylight (from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.). To better plan your arrival, check the exact location on Google Maps.
Access to climb Yaguarón Hill is completely free; you do not need to book or pay for tickets. However, keep in mind that during special events such as Holy Week, a small symbolic fee or parking charge may be collected nearby.
To enjoy the walk, the panoramic views, and take photos without rushing, set aside between 1.5 and 2 hours. The ascent is relatively quick, but you will want time to rest at the summit and enjoy the landscape of Paraguarí.
This place is legendary for the famous "Footprint of Saint Thomas," a mark in the rock attributed to the saint's passage (or Pa'i Zume in Guaraní mythology). It is also a center of religious pilgrimage, especially vibrant on Good Friday with the Kurusu Rape (Way of the Cross).
If you are looking for living culture, Holy Week is impressive because of the massive torchlight procession; if you prefer peace and quiet and great views, go at sunset in autumn or spring. Avoid midday in summer, as the heat on the rock can be overwhelming.
Unfortunately not; the route is a dirt-and-stone trail with a steep incline, which makes it inaccessible for wheelchairs. Moderate physical mobility is required to reach the cross and the oratory at the summit.
You should not leave without visiting the majestic San Buenaventura Church, a jewel of Hispano-Guaraní Baroque located just a few minutes away. It is also worth stopping by the Dr. Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia Museum to complete your historical immersion.
Wear athletic shoes with good grip (no sandals), bring plenty of water, and use insect repellent. If you are planning to visit several historic spots in town, we suggest enhancing your experience with an audio guide so you do not miss any details.
