A biodiversity sanctuary where nature reveals its winged splendor in the heart of Hernandarias.
Ñacunday National Park is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 08:00 to 16:00, and is closed on Mondays. To get there, you can arrive by private vehicle or by using transport services that go to Hernandarias. It is essential to use vehicles suitable for dirt roads, especially during the rainy season. We recommend contacting the National Tourism Secretariat for more details: senatur.gov.py.
Entry to Ñacunday National Park is free, as it is a protected area managed by the Paraguayan state. However, we recommend bringing some cash in case you want to buy souvenirs or refreshments nearby, or for tips if you hire unofficial local guides. You can confirm this information with the National Tourism Secretariat.
To fully enjoy birdwatching and explore the trails of Ñacunday National Park, it is recommended to set aside at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours. This will allow you to observe wildlife at a relaxed pace, enjoy the natural surroundings, and reach Ñacunday Falls. If you are an amateur photographer, you may want to extend your visit.
Ñacunday National Park is of great ecological and cultural importance to Paraguay. It is home to rich biodiversity, including numerous endemic and migratory bird species, making it a natural sanctuary. Although it does not have a widely accessible, complex documented pre-Hispanic history, its value lies in the conservation of vital ecosystems, especially the Paraná Forest.
The best time for birdwatching is generally early in the morning, between 08:00 and 11:00, or late in the afternoon, after 15:00, when birds are most active. As for the time of year, the Paraguayan spring and summer, from September to March, are usually ideal because of the presence of migratory birds, although the park offers good birdwatching throughout the year.
As a protected natural area, Ñacunday National Park does not have fully adapted infrastructure for people with reduced mobility. The trails are natural and may be uneven, especially those leading to Ñacunday Falls. Road access can also be difficult, with stretches of dirt and gravel. It is recommended to proceed with caution and, if possible, with assistance if you have reduced mobility.
Very close to the birdwatching area, the main attraction is the impressive Ñacunday Falls, a spectacular 40-meter-high waterfall that is part of the national park. In addition, Hernandarias and Ciudad del Este offer shopping, dining, and other attractions such as the Itaipu Dam, which is within a reasonable distance.
Of course. For the best experience, I suggest bringing binoculars for better bird observation, a camera, insect repellent, sunscreen, and enough water. Wear comfortable, neutral-colored clothing and closed shoes suitable for hiking. Stay on the marked trails and respect nature. If you are interested in deeper birdwatching, consider hiring a local guide specialized in ornithology. Keep in mind that there are no food services inside the park, so bring your own snacks.
