El corazón colonial de Areguá, Paraguay, donde calles empedradas y edificios antiguos narran siglos de historia guaraní y española. Un rincón vivo de patrimonio cultural y tradiciones artesanales.
The Historic Center of Areguá is an open public space, so it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can stroll through its streets at any time, although I suggest doing so during the day to fully enjoy the architecture and atmosphere.
Good news! Exploring the Historic Center of Areguá is completely free. You can enjoy its streets, buildings, and atmosphere at no cost. The only expenses you might have would be in shops, art galleries, or restaurants if you decide to stop at one.
To thoroughly explore the Historic Center of Areguá and enjoy its art galleries, the train station, and the views of Lake Ypacaraí, I recommend setting aside at least 2 to 3 hours. If you stop to buy handicrafts or have lunch, it could extend to half a day.
Areguá is known as the 'Strawberry City' and the 'Summer Capital' because of its summer traditions and agricultural production. Its urban layout and many of its buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reflecting a rich colonial and Art Nouveau heritage. It is an emblematic place because of its connection with Lake Ypacaraí, immortalized in songs.
The best time to visit Areguá is during the spring months (September to November) or autumn (March to May), when the weather is milder and more pleasant. If you are looking for atmosphere, weekends usually have more activity in galleries and fairs. In the afternoon, before sunset, the lake views are spectacular.
For the most part, the streets of the Historic Center of Areguá are accessible, although they may have some uneven surfaces. The area around the Church and the train station is generally easier to navigate. Some private establishments may have steps, so I recommend checking in advance if you plan to visit a specific place.
After exploring the center, you should not miss Lake Ypacaraí and its pier, enjoying the beaches in summer, or exploring the many art galleries and handicraft shops on La Candelaria Street. There are also nearby hills such as Koi Hill with unique formations.
Of course, here are a few tips: wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and a hat, and don't forget your camera to capture the landscapes and architecture. Consider visiting on a weekend to see the handicraft fairs and try the delicious local strawberry in its many forms. And get ready to switch off and enjoy the tranquility!
