Historic trail in La Palma, Panama, crossing the Darién rainforest and connecting Emberá communities. A journey through natural landscapes and Indigenous and colonial cultural legacies.
The Royal Trail is open every day from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Access is from the community of La Palma in Darién, the provincial capital, where you must register your visit at the office of the Ministry of the Environment (MiAMBIENTE). We recommend using a 4x4 vehicle to get there due to the uneven terrain.
Access is free, but registration at the MiAMBIENTE offices in La Palma is mandatory before starting the route. Some visitors choose to hire local guides (between $15 and $25) for a richer experience.
The main trail takes approximately 2 to 3 hours to complete, although it depends on your pace. If you plan additional activities such as birdwatching or professional photography, allow half a day.
This trail is part of the Darién Biological Corridor, recognized for its unique biodiversity. In addition, the area was ancestral territory of Indigenous peoples and preserves cultural remains. It is considered a living laboratory for scientific studies.
The dry season, from December to April, is ideal for more comfortable walking. In the rainy season, from May to November, the trail becomes more lush but also more slippery. The early morning hours are best for wildlife spotting.
The uneven terrain and exposed roots make access difficult for wheelchairs. It is recommended only for visitors with normal physical mobility. There are forested areas where frequent rest stops can be taken during the walk.
Nearby you can visit: 1) Darién National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2) Emberá-Wounaan communities, 3) the coasts of the Gulf of San Miguel. More information at: visitpanama.com
