A river journey through the history and biodiversity that pulse at the heart of Panama.
Access is free because it is a natural area, but it is recommended to arrive with tour operators in Gamboa (3 km from Panama City). Tours usually depart between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. For detailed transportation information: Official Tourism Portal.
There is no fee to enter the river area, but boat or kayak tours cost between $25 and $75 USD depending on duration and whether activities such as monkey watching or visits to Emberá communities are included.
The basic activity takes 2 to 3 hours, but if you include hiking in Chagres National Park or interaction with local communities, set aside half a day. Bring enough water!
It was crucial to the operation of the Panama Canal by providing water for the locks. It was also a trade route for Indigenous peoples during the Spanish colonial period. Today, its basin is home to Emberá communities.
From December to April (the dry season) there is less rain and the river is calmer. Sunsets are spectacular all year round. Avoid hurricane season (October to November)!
It does not have adapted infrastructure: the Gamboa dock has steep steps, the trails are uneven dirt paths, and transfers to small boats are required. We recommend specialized options such as EcoCircuitos for specific needs.
Alongside the river you can visit the Gamboa Protected Forest, Soberanía National Park (home to the famous Pipeline Road for birdwatching), and the Centennial Bridge of the Canal. The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center is 18 km away.
Use mosquito repellent, footwear for wet terrain, light clothing, and a hat. Always hire certified guides. Bring cash for Emberá handicrafts! More recommendations: ANAM Panama.
