A sanctuary of biodiversity in Panama, La Fortuna Forest Reserve is a green lung that celebrates the natural wealth and ancestral legacy of the Chiriquí region.
The reserve is open daily from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm. To get there, from La Concepción follow the road toward San Carlos (about 20 minutes by car). We recommend confirming hours by calling +507 123-4567 or visiting the official website before your visit.
General admission is $5 per person (children under 10 enter free). No advance booking is required for individual visits, but groups of more than 10 people should coordinate by phone at +507 123-4567. Check updated prices on their website.
Most visitors spend between 2 and 3 hours. This allows time to explore the main trails such as El Mirador (45 min) and La Cascada (1.5 hours). Bring water and closed-toe shoes for greater comfort.
It is a key protected area for biodiversity within the La Amistad-Panama Biological Corridor. It is home to more than 200 bird species, mammals such as the ocelot, and water sources that supply local communities. Its reforestation began in the 1980s.
The best time is from November to April (dry season), when the trails are more accessible. For birdwatching, arrive at dawn (6:00-8:00 am). Avoid rainy afternoons from May to October.
The main trails have uneven terrain with steep slopes, so they are not suitable for wheelchairs or baby strollers. There is a flat rest area near the entrance with an accessible viewpoint.
Just 15 minutes away is Altos de Campana National Park (Panama's first national park) and the artisan town of La Pintada. In La Concepción, visit the Chorrerana Handicrafts Market.
We recommend: insect repellent, sunscreen, 1 liter of water per person, hiking shoes, and binoculars for birdwatching. There is also a local guide service (+$15 per group) that you can hire at the entrance.
