¿Sabías que estos cayos deben su nombre a un par de zapatos fantasmas? Ven, te cuento los secretos que los pescadores locales susurran.
The reserve is open every day from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Access is only by boat from Bocas del Toro (30-40 minutes travel time). We recommend booking authorized tours such as those from Visit Panama or checking updated schedules with the Panama Tourism Authority.
Access to the reserve costs $10 USD for foreigners and $5 USD for nationals (prices subject to change). Tours from Bocas del Toro include transportation and snorkeling gear (from $30 USD). Check updated rates at Bocas del Toro Tourism.
We recommend setting aside 3 to 5 hours to enjoy the beaches, snorkel on the reefs, and walk the trails. Most tours include this amount of time in their itinerary.
This marine reserve protects one of the most pristine coral ecosystems in the Panamanian Caribbean and serves as a nesting site for sea turtles. It was a filming location for 'Survivor' and is part of Bastimentos Island Marine National Park. More information at MiAmbiente Panama.
The dry season (December to April) offers the best conditions for snorkeling. Mornings are ideal for calmer waters. Avoid September-October (season of heavy rains).
Access has limitations: transfers between boats are required (with no ramps) and the beaches are natural. Contact operators such as Super Cat Tours for special needs. There is no adapted infrastructure on the islands.
In Bocas del Toro, do not miss: Colón Island (Starfish Beach), Bastimentos National Park, and the Ngäbe-Buglé community. More suggestions at Official Bocas Guide.
1) Bring biodegradable sun protection (chemicals harmful to corals are prohibited) 2) Water and snacks (there are no services on the islands) 3) Cash for local payments 4) Your own snorkeling gear if possible. More tips at Panama Travel Tips.
