Discover Polo Beach on Bastimentos Island. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
Polo Beach, being a natural beach on Bastimentos Island, does not have closing hours. It is open 24 hours a day. The best way to get there is by taking a water taxi from Bocas Town to Old Point (The Pool) on Bastimentos Island, and from there, walking about 20–30 minutes along a jungle trail to the beach. You can also ask about boat tours that include Polo Beach in their itinerary.
Good news! Visiting Polo Beach is completely free. There are no entrance fees or costs once you arrive at the beach. The only expenses will be the water taxi transportation to reach the island and, if you choose, any tour you book.
To fully enjoy Polo Beach, we recommend setting aside at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours. This will give you enough time to relax on the sand, swim in its crystal-clear waters, explore the surroundings, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere without rushing.
Polo Beach, although it does not have a complex documented cultural-historical significance, is part of the living history of the Ngäbe-Buglé Indigenous community that lives on Bastimentos Island. It represents a pristine natural corner, a testament to the wild beauty and biodiversity that these communities have protected for generations in the Bocas del Toro archipelago. It is a place where nature takes center stage.
The best time to visit Polo Beach, and Bocas del Toro in general, is during the dry season, from February to April and from September to October, when the weather is more stable and sunny. To avoid crowds, I suggest going early in the morning (before 10:00 a.m.) or late in the afternoon, just before sunset. In the low season, you may have the beach almost entirely to yourself.
Unfortunately, access to Polo Beach is not ideal for people with reduced mobility. Getting there requires a 20–30 minute walk along a jungle trail that can be uneven, muddy, and slippery, especially after rain. There are no ramps or adapted facilities on the beach. It is important to consider that the adventure of reaching the beach is part of the experience.
Bastimentos Island is full of gems! Near Polo Beach, you should not miss Red Frog Beach, famous for its tiny red frogs and tourist services. You can also explore the Nivida Bat Cave or simply relax on other more remote beaches on the island. Ask locals about snorkeling tours or a mangrove excursion for a complete experience.
To make the most of your visit, bring mosquito repellent (essential for the trail), plenty of water, sunscreen, towels, and something to eat, as there are no services on the beach. Wear comfortable clothes and suitable footwear for the walk (forget flip-flops on the trail!). Remember to take your trash with you, and if you see a local selling coconuts, support them! It is an authentic and sustainable experience. And of course, do not forget your camera to capture paradise forever!
