Un rincón gaélico donde clanes rivales se traicionaron, un bardo ciego cantó verdades incómodas y las piedras aún guardan ecos de batallas olvidadas.
It currently operates as Dungiven Castle Hotel, so access to the interior is mainly reserved for guests and diners. However, you can access the gardens and view the exterior facade throughout the year without restrictions.
There is no entrance fee to walk around the outer grounds or see the building from the outside. If you want to see the interior, the cost will depend on whether you book a room or dine in its restaurant.
A visit to explore the exterior and take photos will take about 30 to 45 minutes. If you decide to include a meal at the restaurant or walk to the adjacent priory, we recommend allowing 1.5 to 2 hours.
It is the ancestral home of the O'Cahan clan and originally dates from the 17th century, making it a key site in the history of the Plantation of Ulster. It is also famous for the legend of Finvola, the 'weeping spirit' said to haunt the place.
The spring and summer months are ideal for enjoying the green gardens and surrounding parkland. Visiting around midday is recommended so you can enjoy lunch at the castle while taking in the architecture in natural light.
As it operates as a hotel, the ground-floor common areas and the restaurant are adapted for wheelchair access. However, some of the outdoor paths toward the priory may have uneven ground.
Right next door are the historic ruins of Dungiven Priory. A short drive away, you can also visit the beautiful Roe Valley Country Park in Limavady.
Combine your visit to the castle with the trail leading to the Priory for a complete historical experience. If you are interested in local culture, ask the hotel staff about the legends of the O'Cahans while you enjoy a coffee.
