Ruinas medievales de una iglesia parroquial en la costa de Irlanda del Norte, testigo de siglos de historia cristiana y conflictos clanicos. Un lugar sereno rodeado de paisajes verdes y marinos.
As an open-air historic ruin, Layde Church is generally accessible year-round, 24 hours a day, although we recommend visiting in daylight for safety. It is located 1.5 km from Cushendall; you can reach it on foot via the coastal path or by car, parking in the designated car park near the entrance.
Visiting Layde Church is completely free, making it an essential and budget-friendly stop on your route through the Glens of Antrim. There are no ticket offices or reservations required; simply arrive and enjoy the history and scenery.
We suggest allowing between 30 and 45 minutes for your visit. This gives you enough time to explore the remains of the church, read the old gravestones in the cemetery, and enjoy the impressive views toward the coast of Scotland.
Layde Church is one of the oldest churches in the region, having served as a parish church from the medieval period until 1790. It is historically significant for containing the graves of the powerful MacDonnell clan and for its strategic position on the coast.
Clear days in spring or summer are ideal for appreciating the contrast between the vivid green landscape and the blue sea. Sunset is a magical time for photography lovers, as the golden light illuminates the ruins spectacularly.
Access may be limited; there is a steep path from the car park down to the ruins, and the cemetery ground is uneven and grassy. Unfortunately, it is not the most accessible site for wheelchairs, so caution is recommended for visitors with reduced mobility.
You are very close to the charming village of Cushendall, known as the 'Capital of the Glens,' where you can see Curfew Tower. A short drive away, do not miss the spectacular Glenariff Forest Park with its famous waterfalls.
Wear comfortable, waterproof footwear, as the ground can be wet and slippery. If you enjoy history, download an audio guide to your phone before you go, as there is not much interpretive signage at the site itself.
