Un jardín donde pilotos nazis cultivaban rosas y árboles esconden mensajes de prisioneros
The Arboretum is open every day of the year from dawn to dusk. Access is through Castlewellan Forest Park; parking is available on site. More details on the official Forest NI website.
Admission to the Arboretum is free. However, there is a parking fee of approximately £6 per car per day. Check current prices on the Northern Ireland Direct portal.
It is recommended to allow 2 to 3 hours to explore the main trails and enjoy the tree collections. You can stay longer if you plan a picnic or visit the nearby lake.
Created in the 1850s by the Bayard family on the grounds of Castlewellan Castle, it is home to more than 4,000 trees and shrubs from around the world, making it one of the finest arboretums in Northern Ireland with rare species.
Spring (April-May) is ideal for flowers and rhododendrons, while autumn (September-October) offers vibrant colors. Avoid rainy days, as the trails can be slippery.
There are paved, accessible paths near the entrance and Annesley Lake, but much of the terrain is uneven and hilly. It is recommended to contact Forest Service NI at +44 (0)28 4377 0113 for specific details.
Nearby you will find Castlewellan Castle, the beaches of Newcastle, and Tollymore Forest Park. You can also explore the Mourne Mountains for hiking. Check maps on Discover Northern Ireland.
Bring comfortable shoes, insect repellent, and water; check the weather, as Northern Ireland is unpredictable. Download a map from the official website and consider a picnic in the designated areas to make the most of your visit.
