The Horse of Marken lighthouse is private property and, unfortunately, it is not open to the public for interior visits. However, you can get close to admire its exterior and enjoy the beautiful landscape around it throughout the day. It is a perfect place for a walk and for taking photographs in any daylight.
Good news! Visiting the exterior of the Horse of Marken lighthouse is completely free. You can go near it and enjoy the view at no cost. Just keep in mind possible parking fees if you arrive by car.
To see the lighthouse up close and enjoy the setting, I suggest setting aside between 30 minutes and an hour. If you also want to walk around the area, enjoy the coastal scenery, or have a picnic, you could extend your visit to a couple of hours. It depends on how much you want to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the place.
The Horse of Marken, which means 'Horse of Marken,' is one of the most iconic lighthouses in the Netherlands. Built in 1877, it has guided ships across the IJsselmeer, formerly part of the Zuiderzee, for more than a century. Its distinctive shape and solitary location have made it a symbol of the island of Marken and its rich maritime history. It truly represents the perseverance of the Dutch spirit!
Without a doubt, spring and summer offer the most pleasant weather for visiting the lighthouse, with longer and sunnier days. For the best photographs, I recommend going at sunrise or sunset; the golden light bathes the lighthouse and the landscape, creating magical scenes. Avoid days with very strong winds, as it can be a bit uncomfortable by the sea.
The path to the lighthouse is generally flat and paved, which makes access easier for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users. However, keep in mind that the surroundings are natural and there may be areas with gravel or grass. You will be able to get quite close to the lighthouse to enjoy the view, although the ground right beside it may be a little uneven.
Marken is a gem! Be sure to visit the picturesque village, with its wooden houses and drawbridges. You can also explore the Marken Museum to learn about local history, take a boat trip on the IJsselmeer, or enjoy delicious stroopwafels. A day in Marken is a day well spent!
Absolutely. I suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes, especially if you want to explore the surroundings. If you are driving, make sure to park in designated areas and arrive early to avoid crowds. Do not forget your camera to capture the beauty of the place and, if the weather allows, consider bringing a picnic to enjoy the views. And of course, relax and soak up the tranquility this place offers!
