¿Sabías que este brezal holandés sobrevivió a planes de asfalto y ocultó dramas de pastores que pelearon por cada mata de brezo?
As a nature reserve managed by Goois Nature Reserve, access is free from dawn to dusk, every day of the year. You can easily reach it by bicycle from central Hilversum in about 15 minutes, or park your car in the designated parking areas along the edges of the heath.
Entry to Hoorneboegse Heide is completely free for all visitors. It is a protected public space ideal for enjoying nature at no cost, although visitors are asked to respect the conservation rules of the area.
We recommend allowing 1 to 2 hours if you want to take a relaxed walk and enjoy the scenery. If you plan to do a full hiking route or combine it with a picnic in the permitted areas, you could extend your stay to half a day.
This heath is an ancient cultural landscape that contains prehistoric burial mounds and old cattle routes. The area reflects the geological history of the Gooi region and is a living testimony to centuries of land management through traditional grazing.
The most spectacular period is from mid-August to mid-September, when the heather blooms and turns the entire landscape a deep purple. However, winter scenes with frost or misty autumn mornings also offer a magical atmosphere for photographers.
Although many paths are sandy and can make wheelchair access difficult, there are paved cycle paths crossing the reserve that offer excellent views. You can check the accessible route map on the Goois Nature Reserve website to plan your route more easily.
Very close by you will find Zonnestraal Estate, a former sanatorium that is an icon of modern architecture and a candidate for the UNESCO list. You are also just a short distance from the Loosdrecht Lakes, a lake area perfect for water activities and recreation.
It is essential to wear comfortable walking shoes and keep dogs on a leash, as you may encounter freely grazing Charolais cattle that help maintain the heath. Do not forget your camera, and if you bring food, remember to take all your rubbish with you to protect this delicate ecosystem.
