Donde la naturaleza salvaje se esconde tras secretos de guerra, arte rebelde y cabras criminales
The reserve’s natural areas are generally open to the public from dawn to dusk, every day of the year. For special events or specific visitor centers, I recommend confirming the details on their official website before you go.
Access for walking and enjoying most of the trails in Goois Nature Reserve is completely free. It is an open space maintained for public enjoyment, although they accept voluntary donations for landscape conservation and trail maintenance.
I recommend setting aside between 2 and 3 hours if you plan to take a relaxed walk or bike ride to capture the essence of the place. If you are a photography or birdwatching enthusiast, you could easily spend half a day exploring the different ecosystems.
This reserve protects unique landscapes formed during the Ice Age, including rare heathlands that are part of the cultural and historical heritage of the Gooi region. It is vital for maintaining the green separation between urban areas and preserving local biodiversity.
The most spectacular time is in late August and early September, when the heathlands bloom and cover the ground in an intense purple color. However, the early morning hours in spring are ideal for avoiding crowds and listening to birdsong.
Much of the reserve has paved trails and high-quality bike paths that are accessible for people with reduced mobility. However, there are specific areas with sandy or loose dirt paths that may make passage difficult, so it is advisable to check the map of paved routes.
A short distance away, you can visit the famous Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum, a modern architectural marvel. I also recommend visiting the historic fortified town of Naarden or Soestdijk Palace, both located just a few kilometers away.
The best way to cover long distances and see a greater variety of landscapes is by renting a bicycle, as the cycling network is excellent. Also, keep an eye out for the Highland cattle and the flocks of sheep that graze freely and help maintain the natural environment.
