The garden is open every day. In summer (April to October), opening hours are from 10:00 to 18:00, and in winter (November to March), from 10:00 to 17:00. You can confirm special hours on the official website.
General admission is around €9.00 for adults, and entry is free if you have a Museumkaart. Students and children have reduced rates, making it a very accessible cultural visit.
We recommend setting aside between one and a half and two hours. That is the ideal amount of time to explore the tropical greenhouses, the outdoor gardens, and enjoy the atmosphere without rushing.
It is the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, founded in 1590 by Leiden University. This is where Carolus Clusius planted the first tulips in Europe, giving rise to the famous Dutch floral tradition.
Spring is magical for seeing bulbs and tulips in bloom. However, summer is perfect for seeing the giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica) at their most spectacular in the greenhouses.
Most of the paths and the main greenhouses are wheelchair accessible. They also offer a limited number of wheelchairs on loan at the entrance, although some gravel paths may require assistance.
Since it is in the city center, you can walk to the Leiden University Academy Building or visit the impressive National Museum of Antiquities, which is just a few steps away.
Do not miss the Old Observatory located within the garden grounds. To understand the history behind each exotic plant, we suggest bringing headphones and using an audio guide to enrich your visit.
