Antigua biblioteca medieval encadenada en la iglesia de San Walburga, Zutphen. Una de las escasas supervivientes con libros sujetos por cadenas para proteger su tesoro intelectual.
The library is located inside St. Walburgis Church and can only be accessed through guided tours to protect its heritage. It is generally open from Tuesday to Saturday, but I recommend checking the specific hours on the official website before you go.
Admission is not free; there is a fee that usually includes access to the church and the supplement for the guided visit to the library. The combined price is around €10, and you can buy tickets directly at the entrance or through the online ticket office.
The guided visit to the Librije itself lasts about 45 minutes. However, I suggest allowing at least an hour and a half in total so you can also enjoy the church’s architecture and frescoes.
It is one of the few medieval chained libraries left in the world that still preserves its original location and 16th-century furnishings. Its great historical value lies in the fact that the old books are still literally chained to the lecterns to prevent theft.
The best period is from April to October, when the church is more active and the indoor temperature is bearable. I recommend booking the first afternoon tour to avoid the crowds from large tourist groups.
The ground floor of the church is accessible, but unfortunately the Librije library is not. It is located on an upper level that can only be reached by historic stone and wooden stairs.
You are in the heart of Zutphen; take the opportunity to climb the church tower for incredible panoramic views. You can also walk to the historic Berkel Gate or explore the charm of this Hanseatic city on foot.
Visits are limited to small groups, with a maximum of 15 people, so book online in advance. Also, bring a light extra layer even in summer, as the inside of the church stays cool and damp.
