Most boat rental companies operate between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM, especially from April to October. To get there, you should leave your car in the public parking lots outside the center (P1 or P2) and walk to the canals, as the village is entirely pedestrian; you can check the exact location on Google Maps.

Access to the village of Giethoorn is free for walking around, but the boating experience has a cost: renting a whisper boat costs between €15 and €30 per hour, or about €10–€15 per person on a guided tour. Booking in advance is highly recommended through the Giethoorn tourism website.

For a relaxed experience, I recommend renting the boat for 2 hours, which gives you enough time to follow the yellow route through the village and part of Lake Bovenwijde. If you also add a walk and a meal, the ideal visit lasts about 3 to 4 hours in total.

The canals were originally dug for peat transport, creating this unique landscape of small islands connected by more than 170 bridges. Its cultural importance lies in the preservation of a car-free way of life and the traditional use of punters, flat-bottomed boats pushed with a pole.

To enjoy the canals with fewer people around, arrive before 11:00 AM or visit after 4:00 PM; April, May, and September are ideal months. In summer (July-August), canal traffic for boat rentals can be very heavy at midday.

It depends on the type of boat: small rental boats are difficult to board, but larger covered tour boats are usually accessible. However, keep in mind that getting around the village involves crossing high bridges with steps that are not suitable for wheelchairs.

Right nearby, you can visit the 't Olde Maat Uus Museum to see how farmers used to live. In addition, Giethoorn is the gateway to the spectacular Weerribben-Wieden National Park, ideal for nature lovers.

Electric boats are very easy to handle, but always follow navigation rules: keep to the right and follow one-way directions in narrow canals. Do not forget sunscreen and water, as you will be exposed to the sun throughout the route on the lake.
