Antigua puerta medieval en Bergen op Zoom que funcionó como cárcel y entrada fortificada, guardando secretos de justicia y defensa a lo largo de los siglos.
It is generally open from Tuesday to Sunday from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, although this may vary depending on the season and public holidays. It is located just a few steps from the Grote Markt; I recommend checking the latest opening hours on its official website before you go.
Admission is very affordable, costing around €6 for adults and €4 for children, a small investment for so much history. If you have a Museumkaart, admission is free; you can check current prices here.
A visit usually lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, enough time to explore the cells, climb the tower, and take in the atmosphere without rushing. It is an intense but short tour, ideal to combine with our audio guide as you walk around.
It is a unique gem: the oldest surviving city gate in the Netherlands, dating from the mid-14th century. Originally a defense structure and later a prison, its walls tell stories of medieval justice that you will not find anywhere else.
Sunny days in spring or summer are ideal, especially in the afternoon (from 1:00 PM onward) to enjoy the natural light inside the tower. If you want to avoid school groups, try going on a weekday just after opening.
To be direct: it is not wheelchair accessible because it is a preserved medieval defensive tower with many narrow and steep stairs. If you have mobility difficulties, it is best to enjoy its impressive exterior architecture from the square.
You are in the very heart of the city: just a few minutes’ walk away you have the impressive city palace Markiezenhof and the lively Grote Markt filled with terraces. You can make a perfect triangular route between the gate, the square, and the palace in a single afternoon.
Wear comfortable shoes for the stairs and, above all, do not forget to climb to the very top for a privileged view of the city. Also, watch your head on the door frames; the people of the 14th century were shorter than we are.
