An ancient fortified village in the heart of the Draa Valley, home to centuries of Berber history and local traditions.
Ksar Tissergate is an inhabited ksar, so it does not have fixed 'opening hours' like a museum. You can walk through its streets during the day. It is located about 10 km south of Zagora. The most common way to get there is by taxi, rental car, or as part of an organized excursion from Zagora or M'Hamid.
Entry to the ksar itself is free, as it is a traditional fortified village where people live. However, there are some museums or private homes converted into museums inside the ksar, such as the Tissergate Museum, which may charge a small entrance fee for maintenance. We recommend bringing some cash for this.
To explore Ksar Tissergate at a relaxed pace, including its alleys, the kasbah, and possibly one of its small local museums, we recommend setting aside between 1 and 2 hours. If you stop to interact with residents or enjoy the palm grove landscape, you may want to stay a little longer.
Ksar Tissergate is a magnificent example of traditional architecture in southern Morocco, with its adobe houses and narrow streets designed to protect against heat and wind. Its significance lies in being a living testimony to Berber and Saharan life, and its kasbah has served as a fortress and trading center over the centuries, reflecting the rich history of local tribes and caravan routes.
The best time to visit Ksar Tissergate is during the autumn months (September to November) and early spring (March to May), when temperatures are more pleasant. As for the time of day, I recommend going early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the strongest heat and enjoy beautiful light for photographs.
Due to its traditional layout with uneven streets, changes in level, stairs, and sandy ground in some areas, accessibility for people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users may be limited at Ksar Tissergate. It is an authentic place, but that also means it retains its original features. We recommend contacting a local guide or your hotel for more information or specific assistance. You can look for contacts on TripAdvisor Zagora.
Near Ksar Tissergate, you can explore the Zagora palm grove, a vast green oasis that contrasts with the desert. I also recommend visiting the Zagora Sign with the famous 'Timbuktu 52 Days' sign, the Tinfou Dunes for more of a sand-dune experience, and the town of Zagora itself with its market. Many excursions to the Erg Chigaga desert depart from this area.
Of course! Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and carry water, especially if you visit during the middle of the day. Be respectful of the residents, ask permission before taking photos of people, and consider hiring a local guide if you want to learn more about the site's history and culture. Don't forget your camera—the photo opportunities are endless!
