Antiguo palacio sultánico enclavado en la Kasbah de Tánger, Marruecos, que resguarda colecciones de arte islámico, etnografía marroquí y piezas históricas de gran valor cultural.
The museum is open from Wednesday to Monday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is closed on Tuesdays. It is located on Place de la Kasbah, in the heart of the Tangier medina. You can get there by taxi or on foot from the port area. More details are available on the official Moroccan website.
General admission costs 20 MAD (about €2). Students and children under 12 pay 10 MAD. On Fridays, admission is free for Moroccan citizens, but standard rates apply to international tourists.
We recommend setting aside 1 to 2 hours to explore its 4 main sections at a relaxed pace: archaeology, the history of Tangier, traditional arts, and the spectacular Andalusian garden.
It is housed in the former Sultan’s Palace, Dar al-Makhzen, dating from the 17th century. Its collections present 5,000 years of regional history, from the Phoenicians to the protectorate era, making it essential to understanding Tangier’s identity.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer mild temperatures. Avoid the hottest hours of the day (12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Mornings between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. are less crowded.
Access can be difficult: there are steps at the entrance and cobbled courtyards. There are no elevators. Assistance is recommended for basic wheelchairs because of the uneven slopes in the Kasbah.
Just a few steps away are the Strait Viewpoint, the Medina, and the Grand Socco. A 10-minute walk away is the American Legation Museum. More ideas can be found at the tourist office.
Wear comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, bring water (there are no fountains inside), and make the most of the bilingual explanations in Arabic and French on the signs. Don’t miss the main mosaic courtyard and the views from the upper terraces.
