La Biblioteca del Corán de Tamgroute, enclavada en el oasis de Zagora, Marruecos, preserva una de las colecciones más antiguas de manuscritos islámicos del Magreb, testigo de siglos de saber sufí y erudición.
The library is open daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, although it may close at midday on Fridays for prayer. It is located in the center of Tamgroute, about 15 km from Zagora; take a taxi or bus from Zagora and walk from the main road. Check for updates on TripAdvisor.
Admission is free, but voluntary donations for its upkeep are appreciated. There are no fixed fees, which makes it accessible to all visitors.
A typical visit lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, enough time to admire the ancient manuscripts without rushing. If you take a local guide, it may extend to an hour.
Founded in the 17th century by the Nasiriyya dynasty in the Tamgroute Zaouia, it houses more than 4,000 ancient Quranic manuscripts, some dating from the 11th century, making it a treasure of Morocco’s Sufi Islamic heritage.
The best period is from October to April to avoid the desert heat; go early in the morning for pleasant temperatures and fewer tourists. Avoid midday in summer.
Access is limited due to stairs and narrow passageways in the old zaouia; it is not recommended for wheelchairs. Contact the local zaouia for possible accommodations.
Nearby you will find the impressive Tamgroute palm grove and the Nasiriyya Zaouia, as well as the Tamgroute Kasbah just a few minutes away on foot. You can also explore the desert toward Zagora for nearby dunes.
Wear modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees), bring comfortable shoes for walking around the site, and carry water for the arid climate; hire a local guide for in-depth explanations. Respect Islamic customs and do not touch the manuscripts.
