Mount Gourougou is a majestic extinct volcano overlooking the landscape of Nador, offering ancient history, unique biodiversity, and panoramic views.
Mount Gourougou is open 24 hours a day all year round, as it is an outdoor natural area with no restricted opening hours. It is mainly reached from Selouane or Nador via off-road tracks; a 4x4 vehicle or a guided tour is recommended. Check detailed routes on Wikiloc or use Google Maps to plan your trip.
Entry to Mount Gourougou is completely free, with no access fee required. Only consider transport or fuel costs if you go in your own car.
It is recommended to allow between 2 and 4 hours for a full visit, including the climb to the summit and time to enjoy the panoramic views. If you do a full hiking route, it may extend to half a day.
Mount Gourougou is famous for its role in the Rif War (1921–1926), when it was a stronghold of Rif resistance led by Abd el-Krim against Spanish and French colonial forces. Today it stands out for its impressive views of the Mediterranean and Melilla, symbolizing the military history of the region.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal thanks to the mild weather and lower heat. Visit at sunrise or sunset for the best sea and Melilla views with fewer crowds.
It is not accessible for wheelchairs or people with reduced mobility, as it requires hiking along steep and rocky paths. Choose lower viewpoints if you are looking for easier options.
Nearby you will find the Marchica Lagoons, perfect for birdwatching, or the city of Nador with its medina. You can also enjoy views of Melilla from the summit; consider combining your trip with a visit to Nador on Visit Morocco.
Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, hiking shoes, and a hat, as the sun is intense. Go with company, respect nature by leaving no rubbish, and check the weather; contact the Nador tourist office at +212 536 603 050 for more information.
