¿Sabías que en este café de Larache se han susurrado secretos de espías españoles y amantes prohibidos mientras miras el Atlántico?
Access to the Medina and Liberation Square is free 24 hours a day, although it is recommended to visit between 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM when the markets and monuments are open. If you plan to visit the nearby archaeological site of Lixus, its usual hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Walking through 'Exploring Larache' and its colonial architecture is completely free, as it is an outdoor route. However, specific nearby attractions such as the Ruins of Lixus usually charge a symbolic entrance fee of around 10 to 60 dirhams depending on the type of visit.
To enjoy the Spanish architecture, the Medina, and the Balcony of the Atlantic without rushing, we recommend setting aside 3 to 4 hours. This will allow you to soak up the history and enjoy the local cuisine.
Larache is fascinating for its unique blend of Andalusian architecture and traces of the Spanish protectorate, creating an unmatched nostalgic atmosphere. It is a key place for understanding cultural coexistence in northern Morocco over the centuries.
Spring and autumn are ideal because of the mild weather. We strongly suggest ending your tour at sunset at the Balcony of the Atlantic to enjoy spectacular ocean views.
The area around Spain Square (Liberation) is spacious and flat, but entering the narrow streets of the Medina can be difficult because of uneven paving and steps. It is recommended to go with a companion if assistance is needed.
Do not miss the Roman Ruins of Lixus, located just a few kilometers away, where according to legend Hercules gathered the golden apples. It is also worth visiting Jean Genet’s tomb in the Spanish cemetery.
Wear very comfortable walking shoes, and do not leave without trying the fresh fish at the port, famous throughout Morocco for its quality. Remember to bring cash (dirhams) for small purchases in the souk.
