Necrópolis real de la dinastía meriní en las colinas al norte de Fez, con ruinas de mausoleos que ofrecen vistas panorámicas de la medina y un testimonio de la arquitectura medieval marroquí.
The Marinid Tombs are an open-air site and are generally accessible throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset. There is no official opening or closing time. To get there, the easiest way is by taxi from the medina of Fez or, if you enjoy walking, it is a route that can be done on foot, though with a considerable uphill climb from Blue Gate. It is an excellent viewpoint, even if the ruins themselves are quite deteriorated.
Good news! Visiting the Marinid Tombs is completely free. There is no ticket office and no fee is charged to access this historic site. It is an ideal place to enjoy panoramic views of Fez at no cost.
Usually, 30 to 60 minutes is enough to explore the ruins and, most importantly, enjoy the spectacular views of the medina of Fez at sunset. If you are interested in photography, you may want to stay a little longer to capture different perspectives.
The Marinid Tombs are the ruins of the tombs of the sultans of the Marinid dynasty, who ruled Fez and large parts of the Maghreb from the 13th to the 15th century. Although today they are little more than ruins, at their height they were impressive funerary structures that reflected the power and wealth of this dynasty. They are a remnant of the rich medieval history of Fez.
Without a doubt, the best time to visit is at sunset. The views of the medina of Fez in the evening light are magical and offer incredible photo opportunities. As for the best time of year, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal for avoiding the extreme summer heat.
Access to the Marinid Tombs can be somewhat difficult for people with reduced mobility or those using wheelchairs. The area is uneven, with rocky ground and changes in elevation. Although you can get close by taxi, the ruins themselves are not paved or adapted, which could make moving around difficult.
From the Marinid Tombs, you are relatively close to the medina of Fez (Fes el Bali), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can explore its many souks, the Bou Inania Madrasa, the University of al-Qarawiyyin, and the tanners' quarter. You can also visit Borj Nord, a historic fortress that offers other views of the city.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is uneven. If you go at sunset, do not forget your camera to capture the spectacular views. Consider bringing a bottle of water, especially on a hot day. Also keep in mind that there may sometimes be street vendors or guides offering their services; be polite but firm if you are not interested.
