Imponente embalse en el valle del Ziz, en Errachidia, Marruecos, que transforma el desierto en oasis fértil mediante su vasta capacidad de almacenamiento de agua.
As it is an infrastructure site visible from the road, access is free 24 hours a day, although we recommend visiting in daylight to appreciate the colors. It is easy to reach by driving about 10 km north of Errachidia on National Road N13; you can see the exact location here on Google Maps.
The visit is completely free, as this is a scenic stop in a natural setting and a public works site. There are no ticket booths or hidden costs; simply find a safe place to park and enjoy the views.
A stop of 30 to 45 minutes is ideal for this place. It is enough time to stretch your legs, admire the striking contrast between the turquoise water and the desert, and take spectacular photos without delaying your route.
Opened in 1971, this dam was crucial for controlling the floods of the Ziz River, which once devastated crops. Today it is the heart that gives life to the vast palm grove of the Ziz Valley, representing the region’s struggle and adaptation to desert aridity.
Sunset is magical, as the golden light intensifies the red of the mountains and the blue of the water. As for the season, spring is fantastic because the water level is usually higher and the weather is more pleasant than in the hot summer.
Viewing is mainly from the edges of the paved road, allowing you to enjoy the landscape without needing to leave the vehicle or by walking on flat, firm ground. However, there are no specific walkways or adapted facilities.
You are at the gateway to the spectacular Ziz Valley with its thousands of palm trees, and very close to the Blue Spring of Meski. It is a strategic stop if you are heading toward the dunes of Merzouga.
Bring a camera with a good zoom lens or a drone (if you have permission), as the scale of the dam is impressive from the air. Also, be careful when crossing the road for photos, as the N13 is used by trucks and buses.
