A fascinating underground space filled with history and mystery, a vestige of the Portuguese legacy in El Jadida.
The Cistern is located in the heart of the Portuguese city of Mazagan. It generally opens from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day, although it may close for restoration work without prior notice, so we recommend checking with the local tourist office.
Admission is not free; the standard price is around 60 dirhams (about €6) for adults and 20 dirhams for children. Tickets are purchased directly at the entrance, in cash.
The visit is brief but intense; with 20 or 30 minutes you will have enough time to explore the chamber, enjoy the atmosphere, and take incredible photographs. It is an ideal stop to combine with our explanatory audio guide.
Built in 1514, it is a sublime example of Manueline Gothic style and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its worldwide fame soared after appearing in films such as Orson Welles's 'Othello'.
The best time is at midday, when the sun is highest. The light enters directly through the central oculus in the roof, creating that famous and perfect reflection of the columns on the water.
Unfortunately, access is difficult for wheelchairs because it is an old underground structure reached by stairs. In addition, the floor is often damp and slippery.
You are inside the fortress of Mazagan, so do not miss a walk along the ramparts overlooking the Atlantic and the Church of the Assumption. Everything is less than a 5-minute walk away.
The interior is very dark; bring a camera with a good aperture or use your phone's night mode, but avoid flash to capture the real atmosphere. Because of the humidity, wear non-slip footwear.
