Aït Benhaddou es un ksar fortificado en el valle del Ounila, cerca de Ouarzazate, en Marruecos. Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, destaca por su arquitectura de adobe que evoca siglos de historia bereber.
As it is a fortified village (ksar) where a few families still live, it does not have a strict closing time, but it is recommended to visit between sunrise and sunset to enjoy natural light. The main access is via the new pedestrian bridge that crosses the Ounila River from the modern part of the village.
Entry to walk through the streets of the ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is generally free, although some local families charge a small symbolic fee (10–20 MAD) to enter private museums or traditional houses. It is a very affordable experience considering the immense cultural value it offers.
I suggest allowing between 1.5 and 2 hours to explore it at a relaxed pace. This will give you enough time to wander through its adobe lanes, climb to the old granary at the top for panoramic views, and take photos without rushing.
Ait Ben Haddou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is the finest example of pre-Saharan architecture in Morocco. Historically, it was a key strategic stop on the caravan route linking the Sahara Desert with Marrakesh.
The best seasons are spring and autumn to avoid the intense heat; in summer, try to go early in the morning (before 10:00) or at sunset. These times also offer the best light for photography and fewer tourist crowds.
Unfortunately, access is very difficult for people with reduced mobility due to the steep streets, uneven ground, and numerous dirt and stone steps. It is not suitable for wheelchairs, so a certain level of fitness is needed to reach the top.
Just 30 km away is Ouarzazate, known as the gateway to the desert, where you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah and the famous Atlas Studios. It is also very popular to combine this visit with the Telouet Kasbah in the Atlas Mountains.
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes for walking on stones, and do not forget water and sun protection, as there is little shade on the climb. To better understand the rich history of cinema and caravans as you explore the site, I recommend downloading an audio guide in advance.
