Audio Guide of Rugova Canyon

As a natural monument, the canyon is open 24 hours a day, year-round. You can reach it by driving from the Lake Plav area, crossing into Peja (Kosovo) via the mountain passes, or by following the main M9 road that runs through the gorge.

Driving along the road and enjoying the panoramic views of the canyon is completely free. However, some specific attractions within the area, such as the famous zipline or certain privately run caves, charge individual fees that usually range from 10 to 15 euros.

For a complete experience that includes photo stops and a short walk, we recommend allowing 3 to 4 hours. If you plan to do serious hiking along the 'Peaks of the Balkans' trails, you should dedicate the whole day.

The canyon has historically been a natural fortress and a key trade route in the Prokletije Mountains. It is culturally vital as it shelters the Patriarchate of Peć at its entrance, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of great religious significance.

The best time is from May to October, when the snow has melted and the paths are safe. Autumn is visually stunning thanks to the changing leaf colors, making it ideal for nature photography.

The experience is mixed: the main road is paved and lets you enjoy the immense rock walls from the vehicle. However, the trails, natural viewpoints, and paths down to the river are not adapted for wheelchairs due to the rugged terrain.

Take the chance to visit Lake Plav itself and its wooden piers. Also, don't miss the White Drin Waterfall and the Radavc Cave, both located very close to the entrance of the canyon.

It is essential to carry your passport at all times, since you will be traveling through an area very close to the border between Montenegro and Kosovo. Bring warm clothing even in summer, as temperatures drop sharply in the shade of the gorge.
