La Cueva Moraca, enclavada en las abruptas montañas cerca de Kolašin en Montenegro, es una formación kárstica que revela millones de años de historia geológica y cultural del cañón del río Morača.
The cave is usually open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in high season (May-September). It is reached from Kolasin via the E65 road toward Podgorica, with a signposted turnoff. We recommend confirming opening hours before your visit by calling the Kolasin Tourism Office (+382 69 055 800) or checking Visit Montenegro.
Admission is free, but it is recommended to contact a local guide for a safe visit. Some operators such as Montenegro Travel offer organized guided tours (from €15).
The full visit takes about 1 hour. It includes around 45 minutes inside the cave and time to admire the karst formations. Wear non-slip footwear, as the ground is damp.
It is a significant geological site with formations more than 10,000 years old. Culturally, it is linked to the nearby Moraca Monastery (13th century), having served as a historic refuge during Ottoman invasions.
From May to September, when access is safer and outdoor temperatures are pleasant (15-25°C). In winter, snow may make access difficult.
It is not adapted for wheelchairs. Access involves uneven trails and natural steps inside the cave. It is recommended only for people with normal mobility and good physical condition.
Highlights include Moraca Monastery (5 km), Biogradska Gora National Park (40 km) with its glacial lake, and Kolasin 1600, a winter sports center. More information at the official Kolasin website.
Bring trekking shoes, a flashlight (although there is basic lighting), and a jacket (inside temperature 10-12°C). Avoid visiting alone - it is better with a guide. Start early so you can combine it with other attractions in the area.
