The sanctuary clinging to a cliff where miracles cling to the rock
Ostrog Monastery is open 24 hours a day, although access to the chapels and relics is usually from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM in summer and from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM in winter. The best way to get there is by private car, taxi, or an organized tour, as it is located about 15 km from Danilovgrad. We recommend checking the specific schedules on the official website to plan your visit: Ostrog Monastery.
Admission to Ostrog Monastery is free, but donations are welcome to help maintain the monastery and support its charitable works. It is common to leave a small offering when visiting the chapels or lighting a candle, although it is not mandatory.
For a complete visit, including the Lower Monastery, the Upper Monastery, and a relaxed walk around the surroundings, it is recommended to allow between 2 and 3 hours. If you wish to attend a liturgy or procession, you may need more time.
Ostrog Monastery is an important shrine of the Serbian Orthodox Church and a pilgrimage site for Christians from all over the world. It is famous for housing the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog, who is credited with miracles. It is a symbol of faith and resilience for Montenegro.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the best seasons thanks to the mild weather and smaller crowds. If you visit in summer, we recommend going early in the morning (before 9:00 AM) or late in the afternoon to avoid the crowds and the heat. One tip: weekdays are usually less busy than weekends.
Ostrog Monastery has limited accessibility for people with reduced mobility because of its mountain location and the many stairs leading to the Upper Monastery. The Lower Monastery is more accessible, but the path to the Upper Monastery is steep and not suitable for wheelchairs. It is recommended to ask on arrival whether there are any transport or special access options, although in general it is challenging.
Around Danilovgrad, you can explore the capital city of Podgorica, with its Millennium Bridge and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. You can also enjoy nature in Skadar Lake National Park or visit other nearby churches and monasteries such as Ždrebaonik Monastery.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, respectful clothing (shoulders and knees covered), and bring water, especially in summer. If you plan to stay overnight nearby, book your accommodation in advance, as options are limited. And do not forget your camera to capture the stunning views, but be respectful of the photography rules inside the monastery.
