Discover the history, architecture, and charm of Perast from its captivating viewpoint, a gem of the Bay of Kotor.
The main viewpoint, located in the bell tower of St. Nicholas Church, is usually open from 09:00 to 17:00, extending until sunset in summer. It is accessed directly from Perast’s central square, making it an easy landmark to find.
Access to the bell tower has a very low symbolic fee, generally €1 per person. If you prefer to enjoy the views from the seafront promenade facing the islands, that experience is completely free.
Climbing the bell tower and taking photos will take you about 20 to 30 minutes. However, we recommend allowing at least one hour to stroll around the area and enjoy the Venetian architecture at a relaxed pace.
From above, you overlook the Bay of Kotor and the islands of St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks, witnesses to Perast’s naval power under Venetian rule. To understand the legends behind each building you see, we recommend using a specialized audio guide.
Sunset (golden hour) is undoubtedly the best time, as the soft light illuminates the mountains and islands, creating a magical contrast. If you want to avoid crowds, try arriving early in the morning, around 9:00 or 10:00.
Unfortunately, access to the top of the bell tower is via narrow stairs and is not suitable for wheelchairs. However, the views from the ground-level seafront promenade are fully accessible, flat, and offer an equally beautiful perspective.
Right in front of you is the artificial island of Our Lady of the Rocks, which you can reach by boat for just a few euros. In addition, the walled town of Kotor is only a 15–20 minute drive away.
Traffic in central Perast is often restricted for tourists during high season, so you should leave your car in the paid parking lots located at both ends of the town. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially if you visit in July or August.
