Donde las piedras mayas cuentan secretos y los obispos jugaron al 'juego de tronos'
Saint Ildefonso Cathedral is generally open Monday to Saturday from 6:30 to 12:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00. On Sundays, it opens from 6:30 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00. It is located in downtown Mérida, so it is very easy to reach on foot from the main tourist sites. For more detailed information, you can visit its page at Merida.gob.mx.
Good news! Entry to Saint Ildefonso Cathedral is completely free, so you can enjoy its architecture and history at no cost. However, voluntary donations are accepted for the upkeep of the church.
For a relaxed visit and to appreciate the architecture, details, and atmosphere of the Cathedral, I would recommend setting aside 30 to 60 minutes. If you attend one of the religious ceremonies, your visit will naturally be longer.
Saint Ildefonso Cathedral is the oldest cathedral on mainland Mexico and one of the first built in the Americas. Its construction began in 1561 on top of Maya ruins, and its main significance lies in being a symbol of evangelization and the Spanish founding of Mérida. It is a living testimony to the colonial history of the peninsula.
To avoid Mérida’s strongest heat and enjoy softer light, I suggest visiting the Cathedral early in the morning (after 8:00) or late in the afternoon, just before closing. As for the best time of year, the months from November to March usually offer more pleasant and less humid weather.
Although Saint Ildefonso Cathedral is a historic building, it usually has a main entrance at street level or temporary ramps. To ensure the best experience for visitors with reduced mobility, we recommend contacting the Diocese of Yucatán directly at +52 999 924 0793 to confirm current conditions.
Absolutely! The Cathedral is located in the heart of Mérida, right across from the Main Square, where you can visit the Government Palace, Casa de Montejo, and the MACAY Museum. Within walking distance you will also find the Passage of the Revolution and several pedestrian streets with shops and restaurants. You will have plenty to explore just a few steps away!
I recommend wearing comfortable, light clothing, as well as a hat or cap if you plan to walk around the area. Remember to keep your voice low inside the Cathedral out of respect. If you are a photographer, ask whether you may use flash (it is generally not allowed). And one golden tip: look up! The ceiling details and altarpieces are spectacular.
