Antiguo palacio imperial y presidencial en el Cerro de Chapultepec, Ciudad de México. Hoy Museo Nacional de Historia, testigo de la evolución de México desde tiempos prehispánicos hasta la modernidad.
Chapultepec Castle, home to the National Museum of History, is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. I recommend arriving early, especially on weekends. You do not need an advance reservation; you can buy your tickets directly at the castle ticket office. For more details, you can check the museum's official website: National Museum of History.
General admission to Chapultepec Castle costs 90 MXN. Keep in mind that if you are Mexican, admission is free on Sundays, and also for students, teachers, and seniors with valid ID. Take advantage of these options if you qualify. You can check updated prices here: National Museum of History Prices.
To fully enjoy all the rooms, gardens, and terraces of Chapultepec Castle, I suggest setting aside at least 2 to 3 hours. If you are a history lover and like to stop at every detail, you could easily extend your visit to 4 hours. There is no rush—enjoy it at your own pace!
Chapultepec Castle is a site of enormous historical importance for Mexico. It was the residence of emperors such as Maximilian and Carlota, of presidents, and the setting for key events such as the Battle of Chapultepec during the U.S. invasion. Today it houses the National Museum of History, which tells the story of Mexico from the Conquest to the Revolution. It is a place where history can be felt in every corner.
To avoid the biggest crowds, I recommend visiting Chapultepec Castle early in the morning, right when it opens, or in mid-afternoon, from Tuesday to Friday. Weekends, especially Sundays because of free admission, are usually very busy. As for the best time of year, the months with lower tourist traffic in Mexico City are usually January, February, May, and September.
Accessibility at Chapultepec Castle can be challenging because of its age and original design. Although improvements have been made, some areas, especially the gardens and certain interior staircases, can be difficult for wheelchairs. Elevators are available in some parts of the museum, but I recommend calling the museum in advance for more detailed information about accessible routes before your visit: +52 554 040 5200.
The castle is located inside the vast Chapultepec Park, so you have plenty of nearby options. You can explore Chapultepec Zoo, the National Museum of Anthropology, the Tamayo Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, or simply take a boat ride on the lake. There are activities for all interests and ages just a few minutes away on foot!
To get the most out of your visit, I suggest wearing comfortable shoes, bringing sunscreen, and carrying a bottle of water, especially on sunny days. Consider using our IAudioguia audio guide to enrich your experience with detailed, contextual explanations of each room and object. Also, do not forget your camera to capture the impressive views of Mexico City from the terraces.
