An impressive underground cenote that reveals the majesty of nature in the Riviera Maya, offering an immersive experience in an ancient ecosystem.
The cenote is generally open Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and on Sundays until 1:00 PM. It is located at the end of Juárez Avenue in Playa del Carmen; you can easily get there by taxi or private car by following the signs to its official website.
The average price is around MXN 800 (about USD 40) per person. This rate usually includes the guided tour, life jacket, snorkeling equipment (mask and snorkel), waterproof flashlight, and lockers to store your belongings.
I recommend setting aside at least 2 and a half hours for the experience. The guided tour lasts approximately 2 hours, plus time to change and check in at the entrance.
Chaak Tun means 'Stone Rain' in Maya, referring to its impressive stalactites. Historically, these places were considered entrances to Xibalba, the underworld, and sacred sites for ritual ceremonies.
To enjoy the natural light effects in the caverns and avoid crowds, it is best to arrive early, around 9:00 AM. Weekdays are usually quieter than weekends.
Unfortunately, it is not suitable for wheelchairs or people with very limited mobility. Access requires descending wooden stairs and walking over uneven, damp terrain inside the cavern.
Since it is so close to Playa del Carmen, you can combine your visit with a stroll along the famous Fifth Avenue or visit nearby parks such as Xcaret, which is just a few kilometers away.
Bring water shoes and wear your swimsuit beforehand, as the water is cool. It is essential not to use lotions, makeup, or chemical repellents before entering in order to protect the cenote ecosystem.
