¿Sabías que bajo este domo de Monterrey se han visto eclipses que cambiaron vidas? Ven, te cuento los secretos que las estrellas no quieren que sepas.
Planetario Alfa has been permanently closed since August 4, 2023 for maintenance and renovation reasons. Unfortunately, it is not possible to visit at this time. We recommend checking the website of TecNM Monterrey Campus, which managed it, although it is not expected to reopen in the short term.
When it was operating, Planetario Alfa did charge admission. Prices varied depending on the type of visitor (adults, children, students) and whether access to all attractions was desired (IMAX, Exhibitions, etc.). Since it is closed indefinitely, there are no current prices.
When Planetario Alfa was operating, it was recommended to allow at least 3 to 4 hours to fully enjoy all its attractions. This included the IMAX show, the different interactive exhibition pavilions, and the impressive stained-glass work by Rufino Tamayo. A future reopening could keep this estimated duration.
Planetario Alfa was a cultural and educational icon in Monterrey, inaugurated in 1978. It was the first interactive science museum in Mexico and Latin America, noted for its IMAX dome and astronomical observatory. Its closure marks the end of an era for many residents of Monterrey and visitors, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge and admiration for the universe.
If Planetario Alfa were to reopen, the best time of year would be during Monterrey's cooler months (autumn and winter), although since it was mainly an indoor space, it was comfortable to visit in any season. The best time of day was usually in the morning to avoid crowds and make the most of the film screenings.
When it was operating, Planetario Alfa offered facilities for people with reduced mobility, including ramps and elevators to access the different areas. It took pride in being an inclusive space, and any future renovation would be expected to maintain or improve these accessibility conditions.
Although Planetario Alfa is closed, you can explore other nearby attractions in Monterrey. You can visit the famous Fundidora Park, the Santa Lucía Riverwalk, the Mexican History Museum, and the Museum of Government Palace. For more information about these places, we suggest visiting the website of Nuevo León Travel.
If Planetario Alfa reopens, we would recommend buying your tickets online in advance to secure entry to the IMAX screenings, which are usually in high demand. Also, arrive early so you have enough time for the interactive exhibitions, and plan your visit allowing time to explore the observatory and the botanical garden if they are available.
