Donde las 'vacas marinas' escriben tragedias y milagros con sus aletas
Manatee Lagoon is open every day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. It is located 15 minutes from downtown Chetumal — you can get there by taxi, private car, or organized tours. We recommend confirming schedules with the tourism office: Visit Mexico.
Access to Manatee Lagoon is free, although some tours that include a guide and wildlife-viewing equipment start at MXN 200. If you go on your own, consider transportation or parking costs.
The average visit lasts between 1 and 2 hours. If you plan to go manatee watching or birdwatching, set aside at least half a day for a fuller experience.
It is a key protected natural area in Quintana Roo, home to endangered manatees and more than 120 species of birds. This wetland preserves unique mangrove and lowland forest ecosystems.
The dry season (November to March) is ideal, with fewer mosquitoes and a better chance of sightings. The rainy season (June to October) offers greener scenery but higher humidity.
As a nature reserve, it has uneven terrain. Some areas have compacted dirt trails. Contact local operators such as Ecocolors Tours, which offer adapted tours.
We recommend: the Maya Culture Museum (SIC), Bacalar Lagoon (45 min), and the Chetumal Boardwalk. You can also combine your trip with the Cenotes Route if you have more time.
Recommended: eco-friendly insect repellent, water, binoculars, closed and comfortable shoes, and biodegradable sunscreen. Avoid single-use plastics to help protect the ecosystem.
