Fortificación colonial del siglo XVIII en Campeche, México, erigida para defender la ciudad portuaria de los ataques piratas. Testimonio vivo de la arquitectura militar española en el Golfo de México.
The fort is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is located on Scenic Avenue s/n; you can easily get there by taxi or local transport from downtown Campeche in about 10 minutes.
General admission costs approximately 75 MXN. Remember that on Sundays, entry is free for Mexicans and residents with official identification, and it is always free for students, teachers, and senior citizens.
We recommend setting aside between 60 and 90 minutes. This is ideal for exploring the defensive walls and calmly enjoying the remarkable Museum of Maya Archaeology located inside.
In addition to being a key 18th-century fortress against pirate attacks, it now houses invaluable treasures of Maya culture, including the famous jade masks of Calakmul. It is an essential stop for understanding the history of Campeche.
The best option is to go early in the morning, around 9:00 AM, to avoid the intense heat and the crowds. The views of the Gulf of Mexico from the fort are spectacular in the morning light.
Access is limited because it is a historic structure with uneven stone ramps and steps. If you need assistance, we suggest contacting the site in advance or visiting with someone who can help you manage the level changes at the entrance.
A few kilometers away you will find San José el Alto Fort, another architectural gem. You are also very close to Campeche's beautiful Historic Center and its famous seafront promenade.
Wear very comfortable, non-slip shoes, since you will be walking on historic stone. Do not forget your water, sunscreen, and to download an audio guide to discover the secrets not explained on the signs.
