The Purple Islands in Essaouira are not a real tourist attraction with opening hours. You may be referring to the Mogador Islands, an archipelago off the coast of Essaouira that is a protected nature reserve. Access is restricted and only allowed with special permits, generally for research or conservation purposes. The most common way to see them is from the coast of Essaouira or on boat trips that approach without landing.
Since landing is restricted, there is no entrance fee as such to visit the islands. However, if you choose to take a boat trip to admire them from a distance, the price will depend on the duration and type of tour you arrange with local operators at Essaouira port. We recommend negotiating the price directly there.
If you choose a boat excursion to see the Mogador Islands, it usually lasts 1 to 2 hours, allowing you to appreciate the marine flora and fauna as well as the nesting birds. If you simply observe them from the medina or the beach in Essaouira, you can spend as much time as you like, ideal for a sunset photo.
The Mogador Islands, also known in the past as the Purple Islands because of the production of reddish dye, have a rich history linked to the Phoenician and Roman civilizations. They are especially important as an ornithological reserve, hosting one of the world's largest populations of Eleonora's falcon. Their value lies in their biodiversity and their role in protecting migratory species.
The best time to spot the Mogador Islands is during spring and autumn, which are bird migration seasons and increase the chances of seeing different species. As for the time of day, sunset from the walls of Essaouira offers spectacular views of the islands with the setting sun as a backdrop.
Since access to the Mogador Islands is restricted and landing is not allowed, accessibility is limited to viewing them from the coast of Essaouira or from boats. Although the medina of Essaouira may present accessibility challenges due to its cobbled streets, the beach and port areas are flatter and offer comfortable views of the islands.
Essaouira is full of charm! You should not miss the Medina of Essaouira and its walls (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Fishing Port with all its bustle, and the extensive beaches that are ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
For a spectacular view, climb the medina walls at sunset. If you want to watch birds, bring binoculars. And for a different perspective, consider a boat excursion from the port to get closer (without landing, remember) and enjoy the sea breeze. Do not forget your camera to capture the beauty of the surroundings!
