A typical visit lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, enough time to explore the main shrine, the sculptures, and the colorful ceiling. If you want to take photos or meditate, allow about an hour.
Built in 1833 by Tamil immigrants, it is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang and Malaysia, dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, protector against disease. It represents the rich Indian heritage of multicultural George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Go early in the morning (6-9 a.m.) to avoid the heat and the crowds; during Thaipusam (January/February) there are vibrant festivals. Avoid midday because of the intense sun.
