The main access is via the Zao Highline toll road, which generally operates from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Keep in mind that the road closes completely from early November to late April due to heavy snowfall. You can check the current status on the Zao Tourism website.
Viewing Okama Crater itself is free. However, if you go by rental car or private car, you will need to pay the toll for the Zao Highline route (approximately 550 JPY round trip). It is a small cost compared with the stunning views you will get.
For a standard visit that includes walking from the parking area, taking photos at the viewpoint, and enjoying the colors, 45 to 60 minutes is enough. If you plan to hike toward the summit of Mount Kattadake, allow at least 2 hours.
Known as 'Goshiki-numa' (the five-color lake), it is the icon of Zao National Park. Its acidic waters change tone—emerald, turquoise, deep blue—depending on the sunlight and viewing angle, a fascinating natural phenomenon caused by a volcanic eruption in the 12th century.
The best season is from May to October, especially in autumn for the foliage. The expert trick is to go very early in the morning (before 10:00 AM), since fog often covers the lake quickly from midday onward, completely hiding the view.
Yes, the area around the Zao Kattadake Rest House has ramps and paved access from the parking area that allow visitors to see the crater. However, leaving that main area for the dirt trails is not recommended for wheelchairs because of the uneven volcanic terrain.
Take the opportunity to go down to Zao Onsen, famous for its high-quality sulfurous hot springs. You can also visit Kattamine Shrine at the summit or take the Zao Ropeway for panoramic mountain views.
The weather at the summit is unpredictable, and it is often very windy and cold even in summer, so always bring a windproof jacket. A golden tip: check the live cameras or the forecast on the Yamagata Zao site before going up to make sure the crater is visible.
