The park itself is open 24 hours a day, but the paid areas (the castle and botanical garden) are generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours during festivals. To get there, take the Dotemachi Loop Bus from JR Hirosaki Station; it costs only 100 yen and drops you at the entrance in about 15 minutes. Check the official park website for updated hours.
Admission to the main park grounds is completely free. However, entry to the castle keep and the botanical garden requires a ticket, which is around 320 yen per adult. There are also very affordable combined tickets that include the nearby Fujita Memorial Garden.
We recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours to explore the castle, gardens, and moats at a relaxed pace. If you visit during cherry blossom season, consider spending half a day to enjoy the festive atmosphere and picnics beneath the trees.
It is home to Hirosaki Castle, built in 1611 by the Tsugaru clan, and it is one of the few castles in Japan that still preserves its original keep intact. It is also a designated Natural Monument thanks to its more than 2,600 cherry trees, some planted in 1903, creating a unique blend of samurai architecture and nature.
The peak time is from late April to early May during the Cherry Blossom Festival, considered one of the three best in Japan. Another great option is February for the Snow Lantern Festival, or autumn to see the red maple foliage and chrysanthemums.
Yes, most of the main paths are wide and paved, making wheelchair access easy, and there are accessible restrooms available. Keep in mind that access to the interior of the castle tower involves steep stairs and is not accessible, but the outer gardens can be enjoyed without difficulty.
Right next to the park you will find the beautiful Fujita Memorial Garden, which has a traditional tea house. We also recommend visiting Tsugaru-han Neputa Village, located just a few minutes away on foot, to discover the impressive culture of the Neputa festival.
Wear very comfortable shoes, as the park is extensive, covering nearly 50 hectares. If you go in spring, do not miss the nighttime illuminations to see the cherry blossoms after dark, and download an audio guide to understand the hidden legends behind each stone wall and red bridge.
